There were smiles all round when we welcomed our friends from Wokingham, Bracknell and Districts Mencap (WBDM) to head office.

The visit marked the end of our year-long partnership with the charity and we were thrilled to be able to present them with a cheque for £30,000.  It was also a chance to toast Heather Young, who is retiring after 22 years of service as a WBDM trustee and its joint chief executive officer.

It’s been a fantastic 12 months of fundraising. Our first charity black-tie gala dinner in October was a particular highlight, raising £26,000 through ticket sales and a raffle, as well as many other activities, regular coffee mornings and competitions throughout the year.

Ever since our team voted to support WBDM at the start of 2019, our partnership has been about much more than writing a cheque.  We have worked alongside them to learn as much as possible about the work they do to support adults and children with learning disabilities and autism spectrum disorder in the community.

We’ve spent time getting to know the people behind the scenes at WBDM and visits from the people they support have helped all of us to appreciate the variety and depth of the charity’s important work. We’ve gone to see them as well, providing help on projects including revamping the charity’s garden courtyard area and redesigning the WBDM logo.

I’m immensely proud of everything the partnership has achieved and feel like we are all better for having met these brilliant people.  I look forward to catching up with them all again soon and hearing more about the impact these funds have had.
